Save with Logos Legacy packages one at a time!

Which package would you choose first?

For Logos Bible Software users, purchasing resource packages can significantly enhance your digital library. Legacy Packages offer the most cost-effective way to acquire extensive collections of biblical resources as they are 90%-97% off retail prices.

By investing in a Legacy Package, users can inexpensively access a wide range of scholarly works, commentaries, dictionaries, and study materials at a fraction of their retail prices.

To illustrate the power of buying one inexpensive Legacy version at a time, we’ll focus on Logos 7 in our example, but remember there are Legacy bundles currently from versions 5-9 and multiple categories within each version. (I.E., Standard, Baptist, Methodist, Anglican, etc.)

The following strategy works when purchasing any Legacy bundle of any type.

Navigating Logos Bible Software’s library tiers can be overwhelming. Each software version offers multiple package levels—from Starter to Bronze, Silver, and beyond—which can make finding the most cost-effective option challenging. To maximize your savings, you’ll need to compare the contents, prices, and potential discounts across these different library tiers carefully.

How You Can Save Money

View the Collection Value in Different Packages

The “Collection Value” represents the total retail price of all resources in a package. While no one pays full price, this metric helps users evaluate potential savings and identify the most cost-effective software packages.

In our example, when you round off, the least expensive Starter Library has a value of approximately $1,450, the Bronze is valued around $2,400, and the Silver is valued at around $6,000.

Rounding

We are rounding off all the numbers used in our examples to make following along easier to follow the concepts.

It’s not just the value but the value in relation to the cost. In our example, the Starter Legacy costs approximately $40, and the Bronze Legacy costs $90. (Over two times more.) The Silver Legacy, at $350, is slightly less than four times the cost of the Bronze $90 package.

Tip

Always round off numbers when looking at Legacy packages. You won’t need a calculator, do simple math in your head. Does a package cost 2x more, 3x more, 4x more, etc.? Is the value of a collection 2x more, 3x more, 4x more, etc? Once you are comfortable with the concepts, you can tell the best value by looking at the packages.

In our example, you should choose the Starter Legacy as a standalone purchase because it’s less than half of the Bronze, and you receive more than half of the resources.

You don’t need to do math for every purchase, but here’s the math so you understand what’s happening.

  1. The Bronze Legacy costs 2.2 times more than the Starter Legacy but only has 1.6 times more value.
  2. The Silver Legacy costs around 3.9 times the amount of the Bronze while only providing 2.5 times more value.

Given this information, even if we wanted the resources in the more expensive package, we would purchase the Starter Library first for $40. Dynamic pricing would save us money in the long run.

How does Dynamic Pricing work?

Logos gives you credit for your existing resources when upgrading to another library, so you don’t have to pay twice. In our example, we have just purchased $1,450 in resources (rounded), so we can deduct that amount from the value of the other resources. This will be done automatically when everything syncs on your computer, but here’s what it will look like after purchasing the Starter Legacy.

The Bronze Legacy Library will now be valued at: $950 ($2,400-$1,450)
The Silver Legacy Library will now be valued at: $4,550 ($6,000-$1,450)

We know the Bronze is discounted at 96% (see image below), so we are paying 4% of the value. (100%-96%) The reduced value will be approximately $950 so $950 x .04= $38. Once we buy the Starter the updated Bronze price of $38 reflects only the resources/books we don’t already own.

We paid $40 for the Starter, so our total estimated cost for both the Starter and the Bronze is $40+38= $78. That represents a savings of approximately $12 if we had just purchased the Bronze outright because it was initially priced at $90.

If you want the Silver Legacy and associated resources after you purchase the Starter and then purchase the Bronze, the value of the Silver would be:
$6000 (original)- $1,450 (Starter Purchase) – $950 (Bronze Purchase) = $3,600 value.

The Silver is still 94% off, so we would pay 6% of $3,600 or $216. (approx)

How Much Did We Save By Buying IndividuaLY

If we purchased the Silver outright at the beginning we would have paid $350. Because we went in increments of $40 + $38 + $216, we would have paid a total of $294. (That’s a savings of $56)

Logos Bible Software’s Dynamic Pricing can be unpredictable and lacks transparency. While calculating precise pricing changes is challenging, my experience shows that buying Legacy Packages starting with the least expensive plan saves you money. In my numerous purchases, I’ve only once paid more by buying resources individually, and that was with a Starter Collection where the price difference was minimal and I knew it would be a close call.

The Big Bonus Hidden Benefits

  1. You must evaluate every Legacy bundle to ensure you need/want the included resources. Sometimes, you’ll stop after buying the Starter bundle.
  2. You can more easily see only the resources in the following bundle. You’ll click “Hide all Resources” and see only what you don’t own.
  3. You can more easily identify individual resources you want in a package. If you only want one or two resources, buying them individually or with another Legacy package may make sense. Remember to “Favorite” all individual resources you want so you’ll be notified when it goes on sale.

The Bottom Line

Digital library accumulation can quickly become overwhelming. With 6,483 resources in my Logos collection—mostly acquired at significant discounts—it would take approximately 18 years to review one book per day. This highlights the importance of strategic purchasing.

Logos’ new AI-powered subscription features now enable rapid content summarization, making extensive libraries more accessible and manageable—however, the true value of any resource lies in its actual use.

My recommendation is to start small, focus on quality over quantity, and choose Starter Legacy Packages that offer excellent value without straining your budget.

Best of luck on your Logos Journey,
Todd Thornton
